Wrapping Your Head Around the Air Raid

Written by Sean Hawkins on .

So since WSU Football is all "Mike Leach!" these days, and for the forseeable future, it's probably a good idea to try and learn about the Air Raid offense.  You know, Leach's calling card, the spread 'em out and throw it all over the yard scheme that puts up yards and points in bunches?  Yeah, that offense will be on full display in Pullman this fall.

We have at least seen a sneak preview already, from the WSU spring game.  But sort of like the Dark Knight Rises trailers that are pretty much everywhere right now, the spring game is like a 2-minute tease to wet the appetite, and most importantly, leaves you wanting much, MUCH more!

A few of us were talking about trying to get detailed/geeky over the Air Raid, and maybe at some point this summer doing a post about the details of the offense, the evolution of Leach and his coaching tree, etc.  But guess what??  You're in luck, because SMARTFOOTBALL.COM has launched a fantastic read on all things Air Raid/Mike Leach offense!  Check it out here, but just a fair warning - it's a lot to chew on.  I would make sure you can dedicate a decent chunk of time to read through it to fully grasp everything that's going on.  But seriously give it a few minutes of thought as you read it, and without a doubt it will open your eyes to everything we are likely to see this fall.

All I know?  After reading it, I have to admit that now I "get" why Mike Leach is making $2 million+ LARGE to run an offense.  It's going to be a hell of a lot of fun!

All for now.  GO COUGS!

this is going to take my buzzed fan-section game-day critiques to a whole new level of intelligence... in other words, slightly above a 6th grader.

My head hurts. I expect to remember none of this when I'm watching games on Saturday. The lesson as always? I'm an idiot.

@Huddy I am going to read it again to make sure I am grasping it all. That, or keep waiting for the dumbfootball.com to do their write up, which is essentially "you four guys get open and I will throw it to one of you".

That pretty much sums it u[ Sean. I wonder if even CML has analyzed the air raid as much as that article. It's really pretty simple when you think about "getting guys open". The proof comes in the execution though and I have all the Cougar hope imaginable thinking we can watch this in all its glory this fall.

My biggest fear in all this is when we score 40+ points per game, the other guys will be able to score 41+ points against our defense. Should be a fun season anyway, and don't put away the sunscreen until...

@Sutra Wow, those videos have me ready to see some football. And the Clemson/WVU game goes to show how much superior coaching can trump superior talent.
