Tonight, the Christian Caples defeated our Cougies 38-21 and in so doing probably ended the tenure of Coach Paul Wulff, per Bud Withers at the Seattle Times.
We'll be back tomorrow.....
Being that this is the end of the season, I want to say that I am very appreciative of the work that you guys do to keep this website going. This blog has really brightened my Dad's day back when he wasn't doing so well, which goes way beyond football. Again thank you for all the work you guys have done, we talk about the articles on the website all the time.
I hope Moos Doesn't fire Wulff. Wulff has done a lot to bring this program back from what he inherited and if Moos turns it over to another coach that would be a shame. These are his players. This year they have improved greatly. Sure, we didn't get to a bowl game this year, but if we still had Tuel, I think we would have. Dont fire Wulff because our starting QB, then our best back-up, went down with injuries: it's incredibly short sighted. And this rumor of Leach being brought to Pullman? WTF? He'll be here and either destroy the program or be successfull, with Wulff's recruits, then he'll be off to another school, then we're back to square one AGAIN. And Leach is a dick anyways.
This really seems like a super tough situation for Moos to be in. I think Wulff has done a pretty good job with what he's had to deal with... but like people are saying, 9-40 is 9-40, and 4 wins in your 4th year probably can't cut it. I really like having an alum coaching the team and knowing there is just a huge personal interest in the program from Wulff. I think you can be pretty confident with him that this is probably a dream job. That being said, with potential candidates Leach and Belotti, and Moos at the helm making those guys actual legit candidates, I think it makes it tough to keep Wullf around knowing those guys are available and actually a possibility. Keeping Wulff and firing Wulff both have merit, for me I kinda prefer canning him if we can get Leach, Belotti, or some other "name". People do get excited about a hire like that, and that's definitely important. If firing Wulff bring us Wyoming's OC, then I say keep him.
I think we should keep Wulff for another year. I am sorry but Doba destroyed this team. He came in after a rose bowl and by the time he left, they were in the gutter. Wulff has made strides and I think they just need a little more time. It seams that he has had pretty good success in recruiting.
I do have one question:
Is Tuel going to get a red shirt? If not, why did he not play? He has not played in a month. You can’t tell me he couldn’t suck it up for 1 game. UW has a crap secondary and we played a QB who apparently can’t throw farther then 10 yards.
If it's true that Wulff is done, it's a shame. He's a good man and did a lot of good work to build a foundation. Unfortunately, 9-40 is 9-40 and there were too many games in this season that were lost in an unacceptable manner. If a new coach comes in, he'll have a lot to work with. I wish for wulff's sake and ours that the breakthrough season had come a year earlier. Oh well. On to the next one. Go Cougs.
I will say this about Mike Leach's offensive style and its compatibility to the players we currently have:
60 pts per game anyone?
To counter all the "It's a done deal" talk. Vince Grippi questioned Moos about the Seattle Times report, and Moos said, he wouldn't confirm or deny the report, but he has quote "no idea where they got that info."
@cougnation That's pretty remarkable to hear. Thanks for sharing.
@cougnation This post definitely deserves your first "livefyre point." :)
@ErikAnderson Couldn't be further from the truth. Wulff has done very little to bring this program back. Wulff is arrogant, and he probably still blames Doba, and he is a horrible motivator. Anybody at this point, (four years later I might add), fan or coach who wants to blame Doba is just plain weak, and likes to make excuses. How much does Wulff make per year....yeah I feel real sorry for him if he is fired.
"Sure, we didn't get to a bowl game this year, but if we still had Tuel, I think we would have." Yeah right...Yeah right....get real. Let me just speak some truth: Tuel is mediocre, his delivery is slow as molasses, and should have been replaced a long time ago.....Oh and look and what happened....Connor Haliday went in and the mighty Cougs upset Arizona State, and gave a very decent Utah team a run for their money, even despite his three interceptions.
"This year they have improved greatly"--no they haven't. It was another mediocre Tuel Time season, until Connor Haliday came on the scene and gave this team and the Cougar faithful something to believe in.
Let me just speak some truth: Yeah I agree we need to keep Wulff, simply because too much has been invested in him, but the real reason is Connor Halliday. Either Wulff starts Tuel and we have another mediocre season in 2012 , or Wulff starts Connor Halliday and we become a serious bowl contender. Let the Connor Halliday Era begin......he is an incredible talent. I can hear it now at next year's Apple Cup, "Halliday to Wilson......touchdown Cougs!!!"
@Krazycoug Sutra, I love your stuff but I think you're off base this time. Re: Leach; how do we know that TexasTech is a "marginal school?" Based on what? Have you researched academic ratings? I haven't. As far as Wulff's players, actually our APR is now up to 925, which still puts us in the bottom 10%,. I know, our fans dismiss the APR, but still, everybody is evaluated the same way. I am not proud of a 925 APR rating. what do we know about the "moral character" of our players? I have no idea. ". If Wulff started winning immediately, who would have gotten the credit? Wulff or Doba? Be honest. It has to be one or the other. What matters who gets the credit? I also am not in a position to judge Wulff's "values and principles.'" He is a football coach and was hired to win football games. When he was hired, I hoped he would succeed, as with all WSU coaches. I don't care that he is "one of us." I would hope that for $600k/year he would be hard working. That's a hell of a lot of money.
@Krazycoug The question has been asked and answered many times this year on the blog.
According to NCAA rules, a player can not redshirt after he has played a year of ball. He can receive an extra year for medical hardship if he is injured in the first half of the season and can not come back from the injury before the season ends. Tuel played in the 7th game of the season. Thus he played in the second half of the season and can not receive a medical "redshirt".
Also, he did not play today because he has a messed up, reinjured clavicle plus he had compartment syndrome which in some cases can kill you or cause you to have an amputation.
Did you notice that Tuel was not even in pads??
@Huddy Keep the faith Tim. It may be false.
I know we'll win a lot of games next year if we have Leach. Probably will win a lot in the next couple years after that also.
But I'm afraid of the type of players that he might bring in, or perhaps how he'll be as a "man-builder" to the players.
If I remember right, Leach is extremely lax about a lot of things with his players. I seem to recall reading about a bowl game walk-thru TTech did where some players were dressed goofy, hardly looked acted serious. That "disciplinary"/abuse thing with Craig James kid sounds like inconsistent discipline, not strict discipline, to me.
My guess--if the report is true--is the source is none other than El Presidente Elson Floyd. Just a guess...
@cougnation I stand by what I said.
2009 (frosh) stats 71 for 121, 789 yds. 58.7% completion rate. Yards per ATTEMPT = 6.52, 6 TDs, 5 INTs, 28!! Sacks, 121.6 Quarterback Rating!
2010 (soph) stats 219 for 366 , 2780 yds!! 59.8% completion, 7.6 yds. per attempt, 18 TDs, 12 INTs, FORTY-EIGHT (48!!) sacks, 133.3 QB Rating!
2011 (junior) stats 29 for 45, 276 yds. 64.4% completion rate, 6.13 yds. per attempt, 1 TD, 0 INT, Sacked 8 times in not much play, 123.3 QB Rating!
Dude, that's Elite QB material.
You're just young with a short attention span. No concept or appreciation of being able to pull off those kind of stats, let alone pull them off while running for your life on every play!
Sorry I completely disagree. Tebow was on a team with way more money way more support and a way better offensive line. It's not a valid comparison. Halliday is a true stereotypical Washington State/Idaho/Montana bred quarterback tall lanky and a total accurate gunslinger...Tuel isn't even in his league....but you guys keep supporting him and I promise if he starts next year, it will be the same story and the cougs will not be bowl eligible..but hold me to it and I will literally and happily eat my words via you tube.
@Soze I still say keep Wulff for one more year.... too much has been invested in him.
@Soze Yeah sorry hit the post comment button accidentally.
@WallaCoug @Jenkins @Soze @ErikAnderson
Sorry WallaCoug you don't judge athletic talent very well Tuel elite NCAA? Yeah right show me some evidence Tuel NFL???? Time will tell and guarantee you he has no shot at the NFl much less starting on another PAC-12 team. It's time for cougs like you to get real and stop with your blind optimism. Connor Haliday is the future. Tuel is a lost cause.
@cougnation You aren't really helping your argument. :)
@Longball@TruCoug89@Huddy Take your word for it. TTech didn't get hit with any violations that I know of. The guy knows how to coach. He got results and turned a backwater into a year-after-year contender. If we get him I'll support him. I just question his antics a bit. If Moos is in control, I guess we'll be OK...
We might win with Leach, but I doubt I'm going to respect a lnumber of our new recruits under Leach. I may find myself cringing in embarrassment from time-to-time as I read the police reports or reports of on-the-field shenanigans.
Tru, I don't really remember the circumstances. I just remember he has this crazy pirate fetish, and he is pretty lax with his players. Sounded a lot like Denny Erickson at Miami or Coach Pete at USC. I know, I know, those teams all ended up winning tons of games--BEFORE they got hit with NCAA disciplinary measures.
I know we didn't win enough ballgames this year, but I can respect our kids and our program, and I have no doubt we bowl next year.
PS - I'm still not sold on Wulff's X's O's abilities...
