So the Pac-10 media blitz is finally over, and one of the most "visable" few days in Pac-10 football memory is now complete. What did you get out of it? Did you learn anything new? There is SO MUCH to digest after the last few days, but let's at least try to round up some of the best things to take from yesterday, shall we? Read on....
1) Audio, audio, and more audio! The Seattle radio stations have a ton of audio from yesterday's event at the Rose Bowl. If you are interested, you can hear coach Wulff here on KJR, and Bill Moos on KIRO here, at the 33-minute mark of the clip.
From the KJR interview, Wulff does a decent job about addressing his job security, talking about the scholarship hits from the APR and the attrition that comes with a new coach, etc. And did you know that of the 95 players who were on the roster in 2008? Just 16 are left! Of the 105 players who will be on this fall's roster, almost 90 of them are "Wulff's players". And Wulff does say hey, it's a FIVE YEAR DEAL, and the struggles are just part of the rebuilding process. I know many of you can't stand Softy Mahler of KJR, but he hits it on the head when he said "The cupboard at WSU was bare when Wulff took over? It was so bad, they didn't even have a CUPBOARD!"
They also talk about Tuel ("He's our guy"), the offensive line, why the defense will be better, etc. It's a good listen, so give it a go.
Meanwhile, Ian Furness had Brandon Huffman from Scout.com on the air, and they do a good job of talking about the Pac-10 in general. Give it a shot here.
Overall, KJR talked to pretty much everyone yesterday, and you can see a listing of podcasts off their main page here.
Moos on KIRO gets you fired up, and once again a great reminder of what an excellent move it was to bring Moos home. And later on, there was audio on another podcast clip where Brock Huard was saying what a great hire Moos was for WSU. It's one thing to hear the praises from Cougs, obviously, but when a member of the Seattle media talks about seeing Moos shaking hands and hugging people at the event, how they all respect him so much, how warm and engaging a personality he is, well, it does your Cougar heart proud to hear those kinds of things.
KIRO has their entire show from media day available for listen, where they talk to the majority of the Pac-10 coaches (but not Wulff?), as well as Larry Scott, the new commish. It was really entertaining, so I would encourage you all to spend a little time and listen in here on their podcast page.
2) Good articles abound from yesterday. Cougfan has a couple of 'em, one about how Wulff believes Jeff Tuel is "ahead of Drew Bledsoe and Ryan Leaf at this stage" (wow!):
As for the Bledsoe and Leaf barometers, Wulff noted that Tuel's “freshman marks were better than Bledsoe’s stats as a true freshman ... Heading into his second year at the quarterback position, he is probably ahead of (Bledsoe and Leaf).”
You know what? It's true that Tuel was better than Leaf at this stage, but Leaf had only played a couple of games late in '95, throwing for a little over 500 yards as a redshirt frosh (and some amazingly positive moments vs. UW in a memorable OT loss in Husky Stadium!). But I don't know about Tuel being ahead of Bledsoe. Bledsoe showed well his frosh year, throwing for 1,386 yards and nine TD's in five starts. Tuel's numbers aren't quite up to Bledsoe's in comparison (789 yards, 6 TD's) with his five starts, but, let's be honest - Bledsoe had more to work with back in '90 than Tuel did last year, both on the offensive line as well as the skill positions (Phillip Bobo, Butch Williams, etc). Anyway, I think the point Wulff was trying to make is that Tuel, given all the adversity of last year, is at least ahead of Leaf and close to Bledsoe at this stage of his development. Not bad company to keep if you are a sophomore QB!
I mentioned this to our own Sutra the other day, but I have to admit that I am really excited and intrigued by what Tuel is going to do this year! He's added at least 20 lbs to his 6-3 frame, he went to the Manning's passing camp this offseason, he SHOULD have a new and improved offensive line ahead of him (...right??), etc. I have a funny feeling we are going to be very impressed by what we see out of our own #10 this year.
What's really encouraging is to look at what Bledsoe and Leaf both did in their second year as the starter - Bledsoe led the Pac-10 in total offense while throwing 17 TD's, while Leaf would throw for over 200 yards nine times, and finished with 21 TD's to only 12 INT's. Fingers crossed on Tuel's sophomore campaign!
3) The other Cougfan article was a good read from Kevin Kooyman and Wulff (Kooyman is pictured above in what turned out to be his only playing time from 2009 before going down with the knee injury). You get the feeling from the article anyway that they are sick and tired about the last-place-dissing that they have been taking this week. I mean it's almost as if WSU doesn't exist in the bigger Pac-10 picture, and that we are still a "puncline" to the rest of the world, you know what I mean? But it's hard to blame the media for not really paying a whole lot attention outside of the local guys. Ask yourself this - if, oh, let's say ASU went 3-22 over their last 25 games. Would YOU give a rip about anything they have to say right now??? Probably not, right?
4) Bud Withers and Bob Condotta contributed this notebook on the conference, led by some items on WSU. They hit on the Dan Spitz suspension, and the incoming JC tackle who will play immediately, Al Lapuaho. Kind of weird that they can't talk about Lapuaho yet, as he's still in the muck of the NCAA Clearing House, but it's anticipated that it will work out and Lapuaho will be on the field this fall. Anyway, a good read on not just WSU but the conference in general.
That's about it from yesterday.
Oh, one more thing (and Ryan Leaf is in this clip, so, that justifies embedding it on this here blog?). Remember the Allen Iverson "We talkin' about Practice?!?" remix, as well as the "Shamwow, You'll Say Wow Everytime!" video by Youtube legend DJ Steve Porter? He's back, with another mix called "Press Hop 2". Check it:
Classic Friday fodder!
Enjoy your day, as always, and GO COUGS!
