Looking Ahead, 2011 and Beyond...

Hello Coug fans,

I think its best that we all just forget yesterday even happened and move on. What better way to do that then to look at the future rather than dwell on the (embarassing) present. With that I bring you a scouting report on 6'9" Cougar commit Patrick Simon from loyal reader and Rec League legend, Disco Stewey.

Read on for more...

Take it away, Disco Stewey -

Patrick Simon's line Ephrata vs. Selah (tied for the league lead): 27 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 blocks.

Observations:

  • Simon looks all of his 6'9" and 200+ pounds, a full head taller than any other player on the court. Furthermore, he is not overly skinny like a lot of high schoolers his height, but has plenty of room on his frame to add some more bulk.
  • He looks to be fairly athletic though there were no "wow" moments to point to. He only got above the rim once on a big shot block attempt.
  • He has a sweet, and I do mean SWEET shooting stroke. He connected on 5 of 12 three pointers, and all but one looked good off the release. He also had a few pull-ups off the dribble, showing a good mid-range game, but mostly worked off screens. He had a couple put backs inside as well, but worked almost exclusively on the perimeter on offense. He was able to get a shot off whenever, and wherever he wanted. He did not drive the basket at all, but Selah employed a zone D the entire game.
  • He played the entire game and despite being able to do just about anything he wanted, he did not try and take over completely. He seemed content to work within the flow of the game, allowing his teammates, some of whom are pretty good themselves, to stay invovled. He did not force anything.
  • Overall, he was too much for the Selah players to handle and he could have done a lot more, but he is on a good team and does not have any pressure on him to do everything. His line in this game seems pretty consistant with his other lines I've seen in the paper. Once he has his chance with the Cougs and gets up-to-speed with the college game there is some real potential, possibly after a red shirt year.

Thanks, Disco Stewey!

Its great to hear that he stands apart from the kids he's up against at the high school level. That is just the bare minimum for a Pac-10 prospect. I'm also excited about his size and shooting ability. Sounds "as advertised". I'm not sure he'll ever red shirt, since Bone made a point of burning everyone's red shirt right away this season. We also need big bodies so another 6'9" could help us out right away if he's at all ready.

If anyone else out there has had a chance to see Patrick Simon play, let us know your thoughts!

Nice work

Glad to hear the positives about the kid. Not sure I like him shooting 12 three's though, that seems like a lot for a 6-9 high schooler who's so much taller than everyone else! Not complaining about a skilled 6-9 guy, but I would love to see a banger to help out Casto, sooner rather than later.
Everybody wants to be a baller...

Apparently he does play the post exclusively on the defensive end and 12 rebounds is a lot in a high school game (36 minutes?) against a good team.

I get frustrated at big kids who have these refined perimeter games, but have not developed post skills. Perimeter game is a much more refined skill set, so basically they mastered the hard stuff. It really isn't hard for a kid with that kind of coordination to develop some successful post-up moves. Having a complete game from under the rim, out to 25 feet is a one way ticket to the show. Remember that Mark Hendrickson guy? Matchup nightmare. Of course, Simon may have a nice inside game and it's just not what he's asked to do on this team. In High School you are going to have some kids whose only contributions are going to come in the key so as long as they're holding their own in there, why not have the big fella rain 3's? Pretty sure he's their best deep threat. On a team like the Cougs with different needs I am sure he'll be steered more towards the post.

ON that note, did anyone watch Casto's early season interview on Cougs All Access? He talked about how much he liked being able to play with the same quickness and skills as guards, basically. Grrrrrrreat, no wonder his post skills have me banging my head against the wall. If I was his coach and I saw him take a single dribble between his legs or launch a jumper longer then 18 feet, he'd be running. He needs to spend every available second working on his post game and finishing at the rim.

Rumor is that Simon is now being considdered as a McDonalds All American candidate and he had almost 40 points the other night against Prosser, missing just 1 shot.
A mid-range game?

What's that...?

Hmmm......
Casto

Longball, We can't rely on Casto to be our "big man" like Baynes was. He doesn't play with the toughness Baynes did and instead tries for finesse. This is not going to give us points down low. Bone needs to recruit a real center, who isn't afraid of contact, and doesn't want to dance around. I feel if we had someone like this, it would open up more shooting oppurtunities. Whether we get someone off the bench i don't know of or we recruit someone, my conclusion is we need a stronger, rougher, more kick@$$ player then Casto. Casto is a great player. I don't want you to think I am saying he isn't, but he isn't the inside guy we need, and (knock on hardwood) he never will be.

Sounds to me like he's a lot like Motum: tall, skinny guy who likes to hang around outside and jack up threes. Not sure we really need two guys like that. Does this portend the end of Motum?
