WSU AD's To-Do List

In case you have been living under a rock for the last two weeks, by now you are well aware that Jim Sterk has "upgraded" to the Mountain West and that Bill Moos is our new AD.  After a welcome to campus outing, that would have made the Rolling Stones blush, the hiring became official yesterday afternoon.  I believe the last time Cougar Nation was this fired up about something, Bill Clinton was still President.  Read on for more....

This hiring was summed up best in a recent Bud Withers article:

"Well, the Cougars are about to put a deposit in the pizzazz bank. At a news conference Wednesday, WSU will announce the hiring of Bill Moos, 59, to succeed Jim Sterk as athletic director.  This isn't a home run. It's a grand slam on a 3-2 pitch, down three in the last of the ninth, and the ball lands somewhere beyond Royal Brougham Way."

A Husky then wrote the following on my Facebook when I had that Withers quote in my Status Update:

"The great hope of Cougar athletics leans on a 59 year old man.... Sure beats leaning on Jeff Tuel."

At first, I wrote his comments off as general Husky arrogance, hell they were the ones who were considering Moos for their well publicized AD search just a few years ago.  Remember, it was the search that started with paying about $100K to some Atlanta-based firm, and ended months later with the hiring of somebody already on campus; heaven forbid a University President undertake a task like this.

But then, after letting President Floyd's comments about Bill Moos settle in over these last few days, I thought about something:

No, he won't directly win games or conference championships.  But Floyd is the one laying the groundwork to recruit the high-caliber athletes needed to win games and championships.  He is like a mason in that he is laying the brick for the foundation, and he just completed the hiring of a bonafide BCS Athletic Director in about 10.5 days.  For that he deserves a huge thumbs up! Landing Moos, I guess this is comparable to the Arizona Diamondbacks landing Randy Johnson prior to the 1999 MLB season?  You know, a legitimate superstar ACE coming to town, providing instant credibility to a franchise that needed it.  Two years later, they win the '01 World Series!

So, here is what I have on Bill Moos' To-Do List.  Please feel free to chime in on the comments:

1) Complete Martin Stadium Renovation. Duh.  Jim Sterk got the ball moving on this project and definitely laid the foundation. It was unfortunate to hear the talk that Sterk had a naming-rights sponsor lined up, whom he had been working on for more than a year and it involved a donation of more than $10,000,000 only to have it was nixed at the 11th hour.

Moos' job to finish Phase III is simple - RAISE MORE MONEY.  The design work and first two phases are already complete, that could be viewed by some as the hardest part. Word on the street is Bill already has some big-time donors ready to go.  To me, it's not IF it gets done, but WHEN.

2) Start meeting with donors of any level and target some whales. We often hear Paul Allen's name come up, but if Sterk and past ADs couldn't connect with the guy then what makes Moos able to do so?  We'll see how it goes there.  Another name in the corporate world that comes to my mind is former Boeing President, Scott Carson.

But how about all of our athletes currently in the professional ranks?  The Kyle Weavers, Marcus Trufants, and Mark Hendricksons of the world should be able to spare some big money to their alma mater?  It really bothered me to hear a former player during a Night With Cougar Football in Seattle say that he hadn't been contacted by the Athletic Department.  In the midst of a public fundraising campaign for the stadium renovation deemed vital for Pac-10 survival, and they didn't contact this former player?  This honestly blew my mind.

Not that all these guys have the potential to be "whales", but you would think that they should be the most willing to give back while earning considerably more than the average alum, where WSU had a big part on helping them become what they are today in the professional sports realm.

Anyway,  hearing that Moos has the capability to mingle amongst the blue collar and white collar donors should be something that really does benefit the department.  And I love hearing he plans to bring the Nordstrom's Business Model to Pullman; even though the Nordstrom boys are Huskies, it has obviously worked well for that family.

3) Other Facility Upgrades. Beasley Coliseum and the Bohler locker rooms come to mind.  While at Oregon, Moos initiated more than $160 MILLION in facility upgrades, including: Autzen Stadium, two practice facilities, as well as an expansion of the varsity athletic weight room, both indoor and outdoor tennis facilities, and renovations to MacArthur Court and Hayward Field.

Remember when people used to chuckle about the fact that recruits would choose Oregon based on their facilities alone?  Well, like it or not, that so-called arms race has now become a trend across the country.  Who better to lead Wazzu than the guy who was out in front and on the cutting edge at Oregon?

4) Destroy the settling for mediocrity attitude amongst Cougar Nation. While on campus last week Moos said the success Oregon has enjoyed the last 15 years or so in football can happen the same way at Washington State.  He added:   "We need to make this place a destination and not a stepping stone...and it's all about attitude."  During his introductory news conference Wednesday, he said he would like to change our current culture of the underdog mentality, to that of "winning and championships."

So there you go.  Quite a list for the new AD!

Some final hiring notes, per Cougfan.

  • He is impressed with recruiting under Wulff and considers the coach “very capable.”
  • Has tentatively agreed to a seven-year contract that will pay him a guaranteed $455,000 a year, plus bonuses and incentives. The guaranteed portion of the salary is third highest in the Pac-10 among AD's.
  • No promises have been made by Oregon, but negotiations continue with the Ducks on a settlement of the “no-compete” deal.
  • Moos said “there are a lot of things that are not broken” in the athletic department, but he will form an executive committee to help design a “blueprint” for future success.

Have a great Thursday morning, Go Cougs!

GO COUGS! It's about time. I've always been excited about Cougar sports, even in the worst of times. Now's the time to be REALLY excited. Bill Moos has the proven track record for fund raising and even if he can't reel in the "whales" he will energize the regular fans with the regular income. His no nonsense management style of letting his staff do their jobs will pay dividends. Those who get the job done will be rewarded. Those who don't will probably be looking for work elsewhere. His statement that "there's a lot of things not broken"
in the athletic department bodes well for Cougar Nation. From the brash young player, to the first rate CEO, Bill Moos has come a long way. He's the best thing that could have happened to us at this time. Now is the time for us to get behind him and prove he's right in his belief in us.

Moos stated that he would not solely focus on the Phase III expansion, but take a look at all facilities. But he also said that football is the cash cow for the university. I'm sure Phase III is going to be the number one focus, but he didn't want to slight any of the other sports programs. Big things are coming! GO COUGS!!

It was said at Little Creek Casino, Coach Walden will match contributions to a new weight room at $0.20 for every dollar given up to $200K. If my math is correct that could give WSU $1.2m for that facility, maybe more. Way to go Coach! This is supposed be announced and start in April. Hopefully Moos has been informed of this and intends to support it. I intend to do my part when it's announced.

I heard Moos on the way home last night on with Calabro and Jim Moore, and I noticed he didn't seem too jacked about phase III. He wasn't against it, but I wonder if he is sold on the idea of doing it now. He went out of his way to say that the Autzen renovation didn't even start until they had 3 straight years of the highest per-seat-filled ratio in the PAC 10, and said things were a lot easier if you have a NEED to add more seats and people are willing to pay to make it happen! The reality is last year we averaged -AVERAGED- 22,000 or so per Martin Stadium home game. That is 13,000 seats shy of a sellout. If the supply far exceeds demand, then there isn't a sense of urgency. When you think about it, it is pretty amazing we even got phases I and ii done in such a downturn with the football program!

Anyway, these next several months are going to be mighty interesting to say the least.

As far as reaching out to former players with $$$, the "Grey W Club" is still brand new to WSU and they are working on it (formed by Colin Henderson upon his graduation, I believe). Why it wasn't done years beforehand, I have no idea? But it IS growing, and I'm 100% sure that Willie Jude (the guy in charge of this right now) is the right man for the job. I've worked with Willie in the past and he'll definitely bring former players back to campus. For those of us that went to the dinner in Seattle, you saw all the "names" that came back for the first time ever; Jack Thompson himself called it the greatest collection of Cougar football alums he's ever seen in one place. Willie is working hard to make this happen... and just like the Athletic Department and the football team are in good hands, the Grey W Club is also in good hands... I expect plenty of involvment from former athletes in the coming years.

Lucas, we are fired up because we actually LIKE Bill Moos. We were fired up when Clinton was president like a firing squad gets fired up.

Phase 3 is paramount...it's not about more seats in the stadium, it's about bringing in more revenue. Truth be told, WSU doesn't pull it's weight in the Pac-10. That's one of the biggest reasons why some Pac-10 Presidents would like to see us in another league. If we bring more money to the table to share, end of that argument.

Phase 3 is everything, imo, and I have a feeling that Moos will soon come to that conclusion.

I wish I had something negative to say about Moos, but in everything I've read he really seems like a great guy. I think the entire Pac-10 won with this hire.

Good luck on Saturday. Psyche.

Good one LucasCoug,
Lets not make this a political site WallaWallaonioncoug. Lucas was refering to the 1990's as the last time we were fired up about our team's good fortune. Were not talking about what shoe size was that was tossed at "The Decider, Mission Accomplished breath" The moose is loose! Too bad one of Oregon's traits have followed him already! Freshmam Jamal Atofau(Paul W recruit ) arrested for assault. Will it ever stop? Coach can't control the players off the field, but give me a break! kick him off the team and send a message to all players.

On another note... I hope Klay can find his stroke this weekend! He has been playing like a bench warmer the past few weeks. Is that coach Bones fault? Crush the purple pups!! Go Cougs!
Take a second look

@Crimsoneyes - you may want to recant you comment about Jamal Atofau. Head on over to Cougfan.com for details.
That is BS!

They hit Atofau's brother in the face with a bottle??? Do we play Idaho anytime soon? If they aren't on the schedule, can we add them? There is already not great relations with Akey and Wulff, but it really might be time to play them!

Come on Longball, make it happen! smilies/smiley.gif

Peace my brothers, and play nicely! 4th degree assult could be a bystander at a fight with no participation of any kind. I don't even know why it's a law. Let's not over react to something we don't know all the details of. Rather get behind our new AD and make positive things happen in Pullman. We have good thing going to happen sooner rather than later.

Hey CommieRedEyes (aka Crimsoneyes),

Good one with the onion thing.

After re-reading the LucasCoug intro, I think you're right--he meant the era, not the man. And while I'm no fan of Bushy Jr. (spent like Democrat), I would argue that the height of Wazzu excitement was in Bushy's first three years in office (2001 Sun Bowl, 2002 Rose Bowl, 2003 Holdiay Bowl). So there.

(Yes, I know the Sun Bowl season was part of Clinton's final fall of 2000, and he was still in office until January 21, 2001, so I hereby rescind my 2001 Sun Bowl claim).

I hereby pledged to no longer be political--unless someone fires the first shot, which is what I thought Lucas was doing.

My apologies Lucas!!

@Walla, Bush II was in office when we played in the 2001 Sun Bowl. It was played in December of '01. Bush II was inaugurated in January of '01.

Thanks Chris '04!

Both the Sun and Holiday Bowls would have been in the same calendar year as the season itself. The Rose would have been in the same calendar year as the Holiday Bowl.

If I remember right, the Holiday Bowl took place the year I lived in the Columbia gorge upriver from Portland/Vancouver which would have been 2003. I watched it in an Olive Garden in Gresham, Oregon, while on a grocery shopping trip with the wife.

So correct me if I'm wrong... Sun Bowl 2001, Rose Bowl 2003, Holiday Bowl 2003; all in Bushy Jr.'s 1st term!

I definitely meant the last time Cougs were this fired up about something, the President at that time was Bill Clinton. Would never use this blog to talk politics.

Regarding Idaho, enjoy your 15 minutes of fame (if you can even consider the Humanitarian Bowl, "15 minutes")

Lucas
Funny that their 15 minutes came in a bowl called "Humanitarian" and according to the Cougfan report they started the fight and were flashing gang signs. Oh wait, that's not humor but irony!
football and politics...why???
written by norcalcoug, February 27, 2010
Ok got that out of the way with the headline.

As far as Phase III goes, I will defer to the judgment of our new AD on that one. It's a bit of fools gold to follow the theory of "Build a stadium and the fans will come." A better theory is "Build a good team and the fans will come."

Personally I'd like to see BOTH PhIII and facilities upgrades, but I can appreciate a practical approach to this too.
