"Like we don't even exist..."

Being a fan of WSU Football is really about coping with being kicked when you're down. It appears the venerable Ted Miller of ESPN's Pac-10 blog is making the journey to the great Northwest to check in on Fall camp at UW, Oregon and Oregon State. That's right...he is skipping the Palouse.

These are hard times, indeed. I guess there is just nothing going on way up here in the hinterlands of Eastern Washington that is worth reporting on. Except, wait... there is LOTS to report on! How about an emerging QB battle that was thought to be a forgone conclusion coming out of spring, but now has a much maligned senior in the lead, a veteran transferring and a true freshman now part of the discussion? How about two talented transfers from Cal who are looking to make a big impact on the Palouse this year? How about a rebuilding defensive line that will feature a glut of new talent with the letters DNP next to their names on the depth chart. Is Mr. Miller really not interested in seeing, in person, if any of these guys look like up and comers?

As Hawk would say, "it is what it is". Nobody cares a lick whats happening on the Palouse right now. It's sad, because there is a real story going on up here. Looks like we're going to need to make people start paying attention, beginning September 5.

All for now. GO COUGS!

Fine by me, the "sleeper" tag has always played into the hands of WSU football teams.

Good point, Chris. We should all remember to relish the role of the underdog.

Who's Ted Miller?

Being underrated has served Wazzu well. Guess what these five teams represent?:
1. WSU
2. Oregon
3. Boise State
4. Utah
5. Boston College

That's right ... these are the five most underrated teams over that last decade. That is, teams who have done better, relative to all other teams in the NCAA, than pre-season conference predictions suggest. See full list here: http://preseason.stassen.com/over-under/all-teams.html

Don't get me wrong: I think WSU is very much in rebuilding mode. But I also think we're going to surprise a team or two by the team this year's done and being ignored by media only fuels the fire.

Love the underrated report and analysis. Thanks for finding that and sharing.

Shame on Ted...but it’s his loss! Nothing beats the rolling hills of grain (or stubble, at this point) of the Palouse on a hot August afternoon...the sorority girls on the hill for rush in sun dresses aren't too hard on the eyes either.

I, too, relish in the lack of respect. Let everyone think that our guys haven’t improved at all ...plays right into our hands. I think we're going to sneak up on a lot of teams this year!

Do we really want Turd Miller in Pullman anyways? He is a Purple-lover that ESPN.com scooped up from the Seattle PI and is still hanging on to his vintage Don James Husky parka, just in case they actually win a game this season.

Good stuff on the underrated. I had seen that before, I think a year or so ago during "preview season". And I think at the time UW was one of the most overrated as well. :)

Count me in the minority, but I like Ted Miller. He is less UW and more just PAC-10 now, but I don't get the sense he is anti-WSU nor pro-UW. Although this snub does kind of suck, hey, we KNOW Wulff will use it as motivation!

Yeah, i used to not like him when he was on the Husky beat, but he has been good for ESPN. Plus i think he is more Auburn Tiger, than Husky right? Yet he still gives the Pac-10 a fair shake in the whole SEC vs. Pac-10 rivalry. But this is a diss, no 2 ways about it.

I thought the exact same thing when I read that this morning. I'm sure he's not the one making the call (that comes from Bristol), but it smacks of a slap in the face nonetheless.

Theodore was apparently at the Coug after the Apple Cup in 2008. I sure didn't see him there...

'03CouveCoug - WSU got rid of Rush week, so no more sun dresses. Times are tough in Pullman, even on greek row!

LucasCoug said...

Soze, WSU only got rid of men's formal recruitment. Women still have the formal process. So sun dress day is still part of this week. I served on the IFC in 2005, and the IFC of 2007 did some research and found that it was costing tons of money to put on men's formal recruitment when only 125-175 men would join that way. Hundreds of men pledge during summer and throughout the school year. IFC decided their budget should be used for other things. That started last year.

Thank goodness...

My son is 21 months old, and when we send him to WSU in 17 years, I want him to be able to enjoy most of the same things his old man did, this definitely being one of them. Thanks for the good news, LucasCoug!

I think Ted does a reasonable job for ESPN, and I appreciate his defense of the Pac-10 in the debate with SEC fans. But in general, I don't watch or read ESPN much anymore - too much bias and silliness from people like Lou Holtz.

03Couve: I've got a 6 year old who is completely Cougar, and I'm with you, I want him to enjoy the same things I did when I was there. Living in Central OR has caused all my other kids to root for Oregon State. I think it had something to do with the Beavers beating the Trojans last year. I hope the Cougars can do the same thing sometime soon.

No Problem '03Couve. Sun Dress Day is one of those time honored traditions that every male who has ever lived on College Hill has enjoyed. By the way, I recently changed my Google account so instead of plan "Lucas", it takes my LucasCoug moniker that I post on ESPN and CF.com with.

'91: At least it's OSU and not the dreaded quacks that your kids cheer for! Hopefully you've still got time to convert them to the Crimson and Gray. I also agree that Miller does a reasonable job for ESPN on the Pac-10 blog, but I steer clear of it for the most part because of all the whacko mallard, mutt and toejam fans that are over the top. Plus, the SEC trolls coming over to talk junk is just pathetic.

Lucas: I think that sun dress day (week?) is one of the many reasons that I get nostalgic at this time of year every year...boy, college was fun!

LucasCoug said...

I hear you about nostalgia. I've a friend who was on Georgia Tech's campus scouting for an NFL team, and yesterday his Facebook status mentioned how he misses college as he is walked through Greek Row!

Looks like Lobestall had a nice long pass today. Maybe I jumped the gun on his performance in the scrimage.

Lucas, thanks for making my Tuesday great today!

I have to travel out by Pullman tomorrow for work and thought I would try and catch a practice. What time and where does the morning practice start?
