Winner, Winner....

Chicken Dinner..

Or so we will say at about 10:30 tonight.

Greetings Cougar Nation and the new love of my life, Michele.

Unfortunately, I have NO TIME today for the in depth, non-analysis that I provide for you all on a routine basis.

That said, despite my earlier sentiment to the contrary, we're going to win tonight. The reasons, though short here, are pretty basic:

1) We bother people.

The thing that was talked about A LOT the last two years is how dog gone tough we are as a tournament team. The reason: the Pac defense is just a nightmare if you haven't seen it before. And, as we have seen, #1 seeds like Pittsburgh this year and UNC last year, have a difficult time figuring out how to score against us (you can add all of the non-conference yuck fests we've put on teams the last three years right here as well).

To be sure, St. Marys has the shooters to do a Vandy job on us and just light the place up tonight. But, as talented as they are in some respects, this SM team is just not as good as Vandy two years ago, Oregon of years past, or CAL this year. And as good as Patty Boy is, most point guards aren't as good when they can't get out in the open floor. And, unless we put up another UCLA brick job, we're going to frustrate the holy hell out of them tonight.

Remember in our losses this year, both Baylor, the Zags, as well as our Pac-10 foes had seen us and prepared for us before. Ditto LSU via Trent Johnson. And given how unseasoned we were early, remember we nearly even with Pitt with 5:00 left.

So keep in mind that not only have the Gaels not played us before, they've had a whopping TWO DAYS to prepare.

Its not enough time.

2) Let Down City

St Mary's is going to be mad. Real mad. But, have you ever tried to take your anger out on somebody you can't beat up or who doesn't play the anger game? IF you have, you know that trying to do so doesn't relieve anger or frustration, it builds it.

Unless we fall down 20-4 to start this game (which we won't), St. Mary's is going to get more and more frustrated as the game goes on. Dare I say "Bank on it."

3) Free Throw Shooting

Besides brother Klay who has done a bit of a clank job from the line lately, everyone else is shooting free throws well. Included in that mix is brother Casto who seems to have found his touch. We're going to lead late, so we're going to get fouled late. So, we're going to have to make our free throws. We will. And we'll win.

That's all I've got for now. Onward to South Carolina.

Completely agree on 1) not enough time and 2) don't want to be there. Plus apparently there are still "plenty of tickets available" for tonight's game (meaning - the fans don't give a damn and will not fill their 3500-seat gym).

Remember they didn't even know they were playing us until late Sunday. Not only do they have to get over the disappointment of snubville, and that has been difficult if you believe the quotes and such. But also they have to get jacked over a difficult defensive scheme. It is a double-whammy that will certainly keep it low-scoring, and if that is the case, I love our chances.

Just remember how bowl season goes. When one team falls short of their goal and isn't happy to be there, they are usually flat as can be (WSU over Texas '03 Holiday Bowl??). Combine the who cares attitude with a team that is happy to be there (Oregon over Okie St in the '08 Holiday bowl?), well, there you go. The emotion of college kids are such a huge factor, and there is no mistaking who is happy to be here (WSU) and who wishes they weren't (St Marys).

Is the michele who leaves comments here the same michelle who helped form zzu cru a while back? adding 2 and 2 either it is her or an imposter. you guys would so dig her if you meet her. i never knew her personaly but i have heard she is bright funny and cool and easy on the eyes too. just a lurker here not a poster but if it is the same girl you have a great fan reading your work. she would help create chants at games to rattle the other guys. oh and im a chick too and proud to admit i love the cougar hoopsters! I love reading football and everything else you do too so keep up your site.

***HALFTIME***
Worst nightmare so far. Patty Mills hitting NBA 3's, Rochestie completely taken out of game mentally...and Thompson still Ice cold. And for some reason we decide to give Harthun extended minutes for first time all year.

So far, I'm 100% right...

Chris '04? Excited and joyous about the Cougs losing?BH predicts the cougs to lose all the time, which is ok because at least he explains his justification. You? You write a sentence and walk away. I think you should be stripped of your Coug status (what little I think you actually possess).

Proud of our seniors and all of our team. They are more Cougs that you ever will be.

Go Cougs. Thanks Taylor, Daven, Caleb and Aron.

Tough loss last night, not the way anyone wanted to see this group wind it down. Gone is that late kick of momentum they generated, just like that. But in reality, they played last night like a bit of their entire season. Really rough, and also some pretty shining moments. But until the last few games, they never were consistent enough to be an upper-division team. They are exactly who we thought they were?

And so ends the careers of Harmeling, Rochestie, Baynes and Forrest. Good luck to all of them, whatever they choose to do. I would bet Baynes has a chance at making money in this game, somewhere, as guys with his height and skillset aren't very common. But the rest, I don't think so. But hey, they made the postseason for the last three seasons, and were a GIGANTIC part of building a program. For that, we will never forget them.

And Michelle of "ZZu Cru" fame? I wouldn't sweat Chris '04. He's still a Coug, but just different in how he views things. It might be more of a east/Pittsburgh type thing. Just a different perspective.

Chris '04 said...

Michelle, I'm a Coug through and through. Hell, I spent 3 years away from Pullman after graduation and yet it somehow lured me back. I haven't missed a football game since my Freshman year in '00. Please, don't antagonize me. Congrats on being part of the 'Zzu Cru, but don't pretend you're somehow "more coug" than me.

I'm a realist, I knew from the second the game was announced that we were gonna get smoked. Patti Mills is a freak. Having watched the first time St Mary's played the Zags, I knew that if Patti was even at 80% he was gonna torch the Cougs.

Sedi is right, I'm from the east (mid-south) and we have a different perspective. We're not afraid to say what we think whether or not it’s positive or negative. I must have grown up in a different competitive environment where I didn't get a gold ribbon for 9th place.

And on the flip side Chris, you could also probably appreciate the seniors on this team. When they came to WSU it was less than zero in terms of being a program. Almost blind faith led them here, and it paid off with three straight postseason appearances. If anyone would have said they would reach the success they did when you consider where they came from, you would have been labeled insane. While they don't deserve a medal for finishing 7th in the conference, they do deserve some appreciation for what they gave to the program. They are handing it off in about 1000 times better shape compared to when they arrived, so they deserve every bit of praise they get.

Chris-

Then why not say that to begin with about Mills? You came on here with your one liner that we were "one and done" Just ticked me off that you would say something like that without really saying why you thought that way. I know it's not a requirement for you to explain yourself to me, or anyone else but you have to think saying something like that really does get under the skin of the cougs who still wanted to believe this team could be special. Sorry for letting my emotions get the best of me...

And I have never used my ZZU CRU "fame" to justify myself as a coug. I've never used it in arguments and don't somehow feel entitled because of it. A coug is a coug, even if some are more realists and some prefer to wear crimson colored glasses. I guess I just don't understand the realists. I always try to think we can win...

Anyway, GO COUGS

Michelle, you going to work the golf tourney in Vancouver again this year with Todd?

Michelle said...

Hopefully working at both the Vancouver Auction and Tourney...I will be coming from Pullman so I think we still have to figure that stuff out. Should be fun though, 12 tourneys in 6 weeks!

Sedi-Seniors are great, congrats to them.

Michelle-This isn't my blog, it's not my job to craft a dissertation explaining my opinions every time I make a post. If you would like me to do that from now on, tell the guys that my rate is $25/hour and start a salary donation fund. However, I have a funny feeling that A) nobody wants to pay me and B) nobody wants to hear what I have to say.

Being a fan is more than just following your team no matter what they do. You need to be hard on your team. Otherwise they will never improve. Look at the Mariner’s. The fan’s have no idea how bad the owner’s treat them by putting a crappy product on the field. Yet they continue to show up for every game and eat garlic fries (damn, I just made myself hungry). College is different, I know, but we must still demand that the best product is put on the court (field, etc) for every game.

Michelle said...

I guess I don't understand that last part about being hard on your team or they will never get better. Do you mean that to get the message to them we shouldn't show up to games if they aren't playing well? I don't think they get the message by talking about how awful they are on message boards...

Again, difference of opinion on what it means to be a fan...

Chris '04 said...

When I refer to "fan", I am referring to the collective group. Do you think that those football teams down south got to be as good as they are by being complacent? No, the fans (i.e. providers of revenue) demand a solid product be put on the playing surface every week. Of course I’m not going to change anything myself. It’s a different culture up here. A culture of, “we’re all winners!” Too bad that hasn’t amounted to anything. It’s unlikely that we will ever agree, and I will likely get lampooned by the guys in their next blog post. But that’s ok, it wouldn’t be an Internet message board without some friendly banter.

You sound like a solid Coug lover, and we need more folks like you.

As an aside, in an ealier post Sedi mentioned that St Mary's had a 3500 seat court. But watching the game last night the gym looked no bigger than the one at my high school in Spokane. Anyone know how big (small) that thing really is???

Michelle said...

Agree to disagree then... We are all allowed to be passionate as fans, whatever way we see fit. No harm in that I guess.

Looked to me like bleacher seating throughout with the way everyone was crammed behind the cougar bench. It's strange to see an arena that doesn't have seating or space behind the hoop. Did remind me a lot of my high school too. It's funny that our student section is bigger than their whole arena, but I guess that's probably true for all WCC schools.

And so the Cougar teams remain in limbo--the football team with a longshot coach, and the basketball team with one more year of Kopravica. This offseason will be the longest one I've ever experienced.

Hate to see Harmeling finish his career with an airball.

Chris '04 -

The only problem I have, is you said the Cougs would get smoked, and when asked for reasoning, you disappeared. We didn't need a diatribe explaining your reasoning, but something along the lines of what you said today would have worked. But disappearing after your prediction seemed like you were covering your ass. And then to top it off, reappearing at halftime with a smug "I'm 100% right..." probably doesn't help you in the eyes of Coug fans. I'm just saying...

Also, you were right. The Cougs did get "smoked". We were down 4 with 6 minutes to go. "Smoked" is definitely the term I would use, post-game.

Anyways... all-in-all, a disappointing year for the Cougs in my eyes, but anytime the Cougs get some post-season run is a bonus for me. Thanks to the seniors for helping build this program, and hopefully a good incoming recruiting class will solidify the Cougs in the coming years. Definitely the lack of depth cost us this year...
