Tuesday Roundup

Good morning Cougs.  Lots to get to on a busy Tuesday, so here we go.

This week's release has been, well, released. Some glimmers of hope as well, as both Bernard Wolfgramm at d-tackle and Chima Nwachukwu at strong safety now have the "or" next to their names, meaning they COULD either play or start?  We'll see.  The rest of the week will tell the tale there.  Talk about a defense that needs reinforcements right now!  You know, with this week's release, there are only THREE cornerbacks even listed??  Aire Justin at one corner, Terrance Hayward at the other corner, and Shane Thomas is the backup to both positions.  Brandon Jones, nursing a back injury suffered vs. the Beavs, isn't even listed on the depth chart.  Get ready for a ton of 3-man defensive fronts, with every linebacker dropping deep into coverage.  They have no other choice.

I guess if Justin or Hayward need a breather, they might be able to throw Chima in there at corner for a few plays?  Grippi's post-practice report says Chima was running with the DB's on Monday, so that's good.  I guess if Chima can't go, Easton Johnson, still sporting jersey #81 as a WR, will start at safety.  Johnson, you might remember, logged 10 tackles at the strong safety spot after switching positions last week from wide receiver to safety(!).  Amazing.

It also sounds as though Jeff Tuel practiced a little bit, and he's got that "or" next to his name on the release as well.  But as Sir Grippi points out, even if Tuel can play on Saturday, according to Paul Wulff, Kevin Lopina will start.

Meanwhile, Paul Wulff's conference call yesterday came with some news - Wulff says he and his coaching staff are welcome back next year, per Howie Stalwick:

In a conference call with reporters ahead of Saturday’s Apple Cup against Washington, Wulff said Sterk has been “very reassuring about what we’ve been doing.”

“(Sterk’s) very excited about how much work we’ve done and moving forward. It’s been outstanding,” Wulff said. “As we move into next year you’re going to see a hugely improved team, one of the most improved teams around. We’ve got all the ingredients to take a giant step as a team.”

That's great for Wulff, if true.  I mean we all want to believe this, that Sterk and the rest are all on the same page, excited about where this thing is headed, not where it's been.  And maybe he's right, and things are about to take a huge step forward next season with yet another year of off-season conditioning, growth, a return to health for an amazing number of injured, and of course, more recruits to come in and provide the depth they so desperately crave in Pullman.  But will the entire coaching staff get off scott-free?  That might not be as clear.  I guess we'll see what happens after Saturday, but it sure sounds promising for Wulff.

Moving on, Bud Withers absolutely NAILED the current WSU "situation" with coach Wulff and the program in general.  Among the many things to see here are Wulff's continued avoidance of the JC quick-fix, the absolute lack of playmakers and speed and how that's about to change, and his absolute belief that they are killing it in recruiting right now (despite the national recruiting rankings in the 50's or somewhere in there).   A good perspective on pretty much everything, as we've come to expect from Withers.

Finally, we heard from Richard Bray, director of Donor and Community Relations, Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King Co.  There is a good cause going on this week, in an effort to help Seattle's homeless.  Check it out:

As the weather turns bone-chilling cold, Washington Husky and Washington State Cougar fans are being challenged to see who can bring more blankets and coats for the homeless and needy as part of St. Vincent de Paul of Seattle/King County’s “Competition of Caring” drive-- part of the Apple Cup football game on Saturday, November 28. Fans are invited to bring an item to Husky Stadium between noon and 3:30 pm as they enter the stadium.  There will be a Cougar Bin and Husky Bin at each location. Fans will place items in their favorite team’s bin. One hundred volunteers from community will be on hand to encircle Husky Stadium to collect donations. St. Vincent de Paul will announce the Competition of Caring winning team by twitter at www.twitter.com/svdp_seattle.org.

That's it for now.  Enjoy your Tuesday, and as always, GO COUGS!

Sounds like Serk is okay with what's happening but is Wulff happy with his entire staff? Good piece in the Spokesman Review today about Gilbertson's son at WSU. I'd love to see Keith come in and help on the O line/offense.
Good point

I think a lot of people would be happy to have Gilbertson's involvement, somehow. He may not have been a successful head coach, but they all say he was an excellent o-line coach/offensive coordinator in his time.

And I'd say Wulff is very happy with his own staff. He's fiercely loyal to those guys, and I would bet if he had his choice, he wouldn't change a single thing. We'll see.
Loyalty
written by WSU91, November 24, 2009
It has its positives and negatives. Chronyism isn't necessarily a good thing. If a guy isn't cutting it, he should be removed. Not doing so because of loyalty is the wrong move. As always, time will tell.
Bowl game next year?
written by Portland Coug, November 24, 2009
You would think reading the Seattle Times that Wulff thinks we are going bowling next year. I thought he said a lot of that junk last year, how much better the team will be in 2009. Enough talk. It is show-me time.
Bowl game in 2010?

I wouldn't count on it... I think we're still building depth in 2010. But a bowl game in 2011 is expected. At least a 6-6 bowl game.
Getting better

One thing that still irks me about Wulff is his insistence that he was holding people out last year so that we would be MUCH better this year. Well, not so fast my friend. Wolfgramm has been decent, but certainly not as good as Wulff talked him up to be. Same with Zach Williams, he may be good but he isn't All-American or anything. Brandon Jones has been an abject failure, IMO. I've never seen a CB get juked out of his jock so many times as I have seen him do it. Montgomery may have very well been the best RB on the team up to the point that we lost him, very sad based on what happened.

I hope that Wulff keeps a low profile when trying to predict the future from this point on. Injuries combined with inexperience have blown up in his face all season.

Yuck.

7. Paul Wulff, Washington State – After losing to Oregon State on Saturday, Washington State is now 3 – 21 (.125) in 2 seasons with the Cougs and 1 – 10 in ’09 with only the Apple Cup left against Washington. We have said in the past that Washington State was a good I-AA team and/or a good Division II team, but we have now come to a conclusion that if Washington State played against high school teams in the San Francisco Bay area it would lose at least 5 football games each year under Paul Wulff. We haven’t a clue to what is going on at Washington State right now, but we do know that Wulff’s predecessor at WSU Bill Doba put up a record of 30 – 29 in 5 seasons and that Doba’s predecessor Mike Price put up a record of 125 – 84 in 14 seasons. So let’s see here…

Mike Price – 125 – 84 (.59smilies/cool.gif – 14 seasons

Bill Doba – 30 – 29 (.50smilies/cool.gif – 5 seasons

Paul Wulff – 3 – 21 (.125) – 2 seasons

What? Come on, this is getting just plain flat-out stupid at Washington State! The saddest thing is that Paul Wulff could probably lose to Washington in the last game of the year and lose every game next season and the folks in Pullman would throw him a party! Yes, they would put right on the cake Wulff’s record of 3 – 34 (.081) and have it put on balloons as well! Let’s have a party!

Please, someone drop us an email when Washington State gets back in the football business!

Why does it matter what some website thinks about Paul Wulff's status? HE IS COMING BACK NEXT YEAR. Do you really think Sterk gives a rip about www.coacheshotseat.com? I sure don't.

Great interview over on Cougfan with Jim Sterk. He expects us to compete for a bowl win by 2011. I have a feeling Wulff won't be going anywhere, when the AD doesn't even expect the program to be bowling for another two years.

If you don't like Wulff, than start donating more money to Athletics....
Whatever

The fact that that web page even tongue in cheek says we would lose to high school football teams in the bay area renders its conclusions completely merit-less. Reminds me of all the people saying "USC could beat the Detroit Lions". No, they couldn't. Stop.

Look, Wulff is going to be here next year. Like it or not, that's the reality. I am forced to judge Wulff based on what he does to improve the program next year. And so it goes...

Clearly, that blog covers coaching situations very poorly.

Not to beat a dead horse but other than defiant Cougar loyalty what exactly makes people believers of Paul Wulff as a Div I head football coach? Stats, facts, real world examples anyone?? 'Cause in my world his record speaks for itself.
