Sterk on Cougfan: No Need to Change Direction

Good read today, from Howie Stalwick on Cougfan with Jim Sterk, WSU AD.  Among the quotes are his beliefs in Wulff and the direction of the program, some heightened expectations for 2010-2011, an update on the schedule including what might happen with the Qwest Field game, and finally, an update on Phase III.

You know, I don't blame Sterk one bit about talking up the expectations.  The thing is, if anyone remembers back to the 2000 season, Jim Sterk was quoted on KJR as saying that "Mike Price needs to win now" after three straight last-place finishes.  I remember driving to work that morning and listening to that interview, and kind of raising my eyebrows at the whole thing.  It was the first time I heard Price more or less called out like that.  I guess I thought like everyone else, that Price was simply living in Free Pass world, based on 1997 in Pullman.  But three years of awfulness was just about enough, for Sterk and the rest, and it was time to turn it all around.  Sure enough, the greatest stretch in school history went down from 01-03.  Will it work?  Is it realistic?  We'll get into next year, well, later.  But it's going to be tough.  Remember, Sterk also warned earlier this year that 2010 could mean another losing season, so even he's aware with the schedule and youth and all that for next year that it's going to be a challenge to turn this thing around.

Finally, Twilight.  I know, I know, not a real popular topic around here I would imagine?  It's off to a super-terrific start in the box office, even threatening my Dark Knight for most ever in the opening week?!? How dare they!

Now, many of you may have a wife/girlfriend/significant other dreaming about the vampire or warewolf or whatever else they come up with to sweep them off their feet and out of the mundane, ordinary existence in FORKS, WA??  You know, for a while I didn't "get" Twilight.  But now, after reading this post?  I do "get" it.  And the "get" in all this?  I'm not SUPPOSED to "get it".  I mean I love a great drama like the rest of them, but this story just missed with me, and now I know why.  Thanks to "The Oatmeal" for showing me the light.

Now, where's Blade when you need him?  Anyone?  Can I get Blade, please??

Now that's a sequel I want to see....

Enjoy the rest of your day, and GO COUGS!

As a 1967 graduate, I have seen plenty of WSU losing seasons and enjoyed the Apple Cup wins and Rose Bowl highs. We have been in losing circumstances before and it does take time to rebuild and a season of few injuries to come back to heady success. In my limited view, our defense has played pretty well given the place the offense put them in repeatedly. And, I think we showed improvements in the second half of several of the games, recalling that there were occasions Price-led teams appeared incapable of doing anything different or better in second half. My take is give Wolf at least two more seasons. Remember also that his first recruiting class was done at next to the last minute because the hiring stretched out, so that first class may not have been as good as the second.

No need to change direction? Wulff says the fans "don't know the details." The only detail we need to know is that this team is 3-21 in two seasons under the new regime. There may be a lot of high fiving and ass slapping in the locker room, but this team has not improved from last year at all. In fact, the record is worse. No coach in any reputable (and proud) program in the country could survive a record like this, except at WSU. Time to make a change. In terms of improved recruiting, take a look at the ranking of next year's class. Take a look at who recruited Jeff Tuel (the QB of the future?) Pretty dismal folks. At least Bill Doba could get you five or six wins.

"At least Bill Doba could get you five or six wins."

Riding the coattails of some of the best WSU teams in history, Wulff could have too.

What I find telling is that I haven't heard anybody question the heart of our players. If Wulff is really as bad as everyone says, we'd be seeing players mailing it in, fights on the sidelines, etc. But you listen to the post game show and every single player is surprisingly upbeat after yet another loss and anxious to get back out there again.

In the last two years I haven't heard a SINGLE THING from any player that made me think they didn't absolutely believe that, under Wulff, this program isn't capable of what we think it is.

It getting almost pointless to argue with the people that are hellbent on Wulff getting fired. Everything has been discussed ad nauseaum (sp). We have no choice but to see this thing through. It will be in the best interest of all of us if Wulff succeeds.
