U-G-L-Y Day for the PAC

Well, at least we still have USC. But my goodness, what an UGLY day for the Pac-10.

We started things off with our Friday Night Whoopin' at Waco. But holy COW, what a down day for the conference. Of course we are top-heavy with USC, which looks like they could challenge the Cleveland Browns right now. But the rest? Eh, not so much.

Cal can go ahead and cancel their BCS championship parade, as well as the Heisman ceremony for Jahvid Best, don't you think? Speaking of BCS, for as great as they claim to be, Cal still hasn't even been to a BCS bowl in the Tedford era. Anyone else tired of Cal fans and their act of late? To hear them recently, after beating Michigan State and humiliating WSU that they are the greatest team ever assembled. But after losing to an unranked Maryland team, BZZT. Sorry.

TCU wiped out Stanford. I don't think that was too much of a surprise, and Stanford hung tough for the first half, but then were run over after halftime. But Stanford, geez, just 193 yards of total offense?

Oregon looked doomed, but then rallied to beat an unranked Purdue team in double-OT, and only after Purdue missed field goals at the end of regulation and overtime.

ASU lost - AT HOME - TO UNLV!?!? The same ASU everyone, including myself, picked to finish 2nd in the conference?? Unbelievable.

BYU absolutely smoked UCLA, 59-0. 59-0!?!? Worst UCLA loss in 75 years. I know we just lost 66-3 to Cal, but at least that's to a BCS conference team. But to go down 59-0 to a Mountain West team?? BYU's Max Hall threw SEVEN TD's, including six in the first half? WOW is right.

Arizona lost to New Mexico? Yet another Mountain West team beats the Pac-10. And Zona gave up 36 points to boot, while turning it over FIVE times. New Mexico was 0-2 coming into this one as well. Great.

Oregon State represented well, blowing out a bad Hawaii football team 45-7. Maybe we have some hope for 11/29?

Finally, UW. How ugly was it?

Even the fat Sooner fan with absolutely no life was apologizing for the wipe out.

Let's just say that 55-14 as the final score was much, much closer than the actual game. Oklahoma had 591 yards of total offense and 48 points....with three minutes left in the THIRD QUARTER. Stoops cleared the bench at that point, but that was as complete a domination that has happened in the Willingham era. In fact, the margin of loss was their worst since 2003.

So, yep, outside of USC? WE SUCK right now. All of us.

Happy Sunday!

Boy this is the lowest point for WA sports in years. I can't remember a worse time to root for a team from Washington State.

Unless you really believe that Pargo is like Jordan Farmar or Mateen Cleeves, it will be a long fall and winter for Washington State sports fans.

Give WSU credit, they didn't schedule three impossible teams like the Purple team did.

Portland State, Arizona and Stanford are definite wins for the Crimson and Gray.

I would like to try to bring WSU into prospective as compared to other PAC 10 schools. I'm trying to show the uphill battle that we have in Athletics so here goes.
The average PAC 10 Athletic budget is $55m ranging from a high of $76m at USC to a low of $33m at WSU. The next lowest budget is OSU at $45m so WSU is $12m below the second lowest budget and $22m below the average.

The average attendance at football games is 53,000 ranging from a high at USC of 90,000 to a low at WSU of 33,000 (might go down more this year).

As far as a market rank, WSU is 92nd (Spokane) with Arizona having the 2nd lowest at 61 (Tucson).

I guess what I am trying to say, is that Cougars need to go the extra mile to support WSU Athletics because there is a lot working against success there. WSU can not hire high profile coaches because they can't afford it. They can't fire coaches that have not come to the end of their contracts because they can't afford it.
They have raised more money in support of the renovation of Martin Stadium, yet need much more to make it happen.
We all need to just keep giving and get more people involved. I know that is hard to do with the economy and the state of the football team right now, but what comes first - the chicken or the egg?

To the points in previous comments...Gary Rogers has as much chance of becoming an NFL quarterback as Kyle Weaver does of becoming an NFL quarterback...and Brandon Gibson making an nfl team will have the exact same impact on recruiting as Michael Bumpus making an nfl team....Zero.

So Bumpus with a couple of catches yesterday and a 30-yd punt return in his first-ever game....zero? You are a moron and a coward for not even using a name, and then spouting unfounded BS.

Chill-pill for everyone. "E" makes the best point of all in that how can we expect to win by turning the ball over when we don't even have a defense that can do the same? The ballhawks are long gone. When are are going through all these changes and you are also shooting yourself in the foot how can you hope to win? It will get better guys, the turnovers will calm down. Don't blame coaches if the players don't know everything yet. There is a lot on their minds right now and it is not a fun time. It will come.

Anonymous,

Good point about the market size. However, Seattle must be larger than Tucson and has two lousy teams in the M's and Huskies.
UCLA football has been up and down and they're in the second largest market in the country, of course they have this other school called USC to worry about.

At least the Cougs will be favored over Portland State, aka Neil Lomax's alma mater.

Two months til GU and WSU Hoops!!

You guys are so right and so smart. I mean, when you go into a recruit's living room during a time that the world is telling him how wonderful he is, it really makes NO DIFFERENCE whether or not you are sending kids to the NFL.

In fact, I think that our line is, "Come to B-F Egypt in the Palouse, get an education, stay out of trouble, and get a degree because you will NEVER play in the NFL, you stinkin' scrub."

You don't think it makes a difference for coaches to be able to talk about kids who have made the pros from WSU?

Sheesh.
