Mike Price Can't Confirm, Deny Interest in WSU?

So the old Riverboat Gambler dropped by KJR today. Here's a link to the interview, if you wish. It's not bad (that is, if you can stomach "Softy" Mohler. I even know Husky fans that can only roll their eyes at the very mention of his name).

There's a lot about the state of the UTEP football program, but you can skip past that. The thing to get your attention is what he said as the interview came to a close. I'll paraphrase a little for you:

Mahler: "If things don't work out with Dobes, will Mike Price ever go back to Pullman to coach the Cougars?"

Price: "Well we love Pullman, we love WSU and we're, well, you know, we have property in Washington and lake property in Coeur D' Alene. So we'll be going back there sometime, and we'll always be fans of WSU. All 3 of my kids were born there."

Mahler: "That's the politically correct answer isn't it?"

Price: "Hey, I'm cheering for Bill all the way. The best thing in the world would to beat OSU and UW and get to a bowl game, and hopefully it'll be for the Sun Bowl in El Paso. I'm not giving up on the Cougars, and the Cougars aren't giving up on themselves and I know Cougar fans aren't giving up on Bill Doba, so, he's the right man for the job."

Not exactly strong words to either side of the fence. I guess he could have said NO WAY, I'm thrilled to be in El Paso and this is home now, blah blah blah...but he didn't. But I guess the question is, what SHOULD he say in that situation? Yes I want the job if/when Bill is fired? No, I have no interest at all? He's just playing his cards right. In this business it seems, you never really say never!

There will be plenty of time to speculate on a replacement, provided there is a need after the season. There are already rumors that Doba is safe. Howie Stalwick (who is EVERYWHERE lately!) wrote a column today at Cougfan and dropped in the little morsel that Doba's buyout as well as the assistants would be spread out over the coming years, so, just like we've speculated, you don't need $2.8 large in a pile to make these guys disappear. But like Howie says, we can't imagine they'll be replacing Doba if they can go 6-6 and get to a bowl.....but at 4-8 or even 5-7?.....who knows.

Right now my gut feeling about Dobe's future swings one way or the other every week depending on if we win, or lose. But i really do think it is coming down to 2 more wins, no change, 1 more loss, we shufle the deck. But bringing back Papa Price? When i lay out the pro's and cons of that move the lists are about even. I would love to see a candidate that weighs more heavily on the "pro's" side.

Damn i hate the Ducks and love to see their fans brought back down to earth, but did it have to be by Stoops? that guy is the poster-boy for JERKS. That game also does nothing for our bowl hopes should we win out, and costs us $ we would have collected as a conference for having 2 BCS teams. Oh well. How bout those students beginning their field rush at the 2:19 mark? talk about pre-mature ejacu... uh, nevermind.

Oh yeah, and it was great to see the Pac-10 refs ineptitude put on display on national TV. Something that was not lost on the broadcast crew. I especialy liked when (was it Fowler?) said sarcastically after they had to confer over a simple call... "Nothing gets past these guys." Ha.

"this thing called "failure" is not the falling down, its the STAYING down".....

why can't we go for the gusto and get an up and coming brilliant and passionate young coach?...why is Doba even considered and what is this nonsense about Price....

about Alice, er, I mean Alex....yes, it all is a moot point now.....

I have never seen a qb have so little impact on a game as does AB.... he doesn't lose games much but he doesn't win them either.....its almost like he has made the qb position at WSU invisible.....

I think you are right Longball, I think a bowl game and he stays, and we just ride things out another year. But I just wonder if even this turnaround saves him. We have our sources, and things have been awfully quiet lately so I am starting to wonder if it's already decided that he's back. We'll see.

I posted this thing on Price just because it's a big fat no-comment on if he'd come back. I really don't have a feel one way or the other on Price returning to Pullman, other than to think that if I was him? I wouldn't do it. To me, it seems like he could only fail if he came back. I mean really, he took us to 2 Rose Bowls after we hadn't been there in almost 70 years. He took us to heights some WSU fans never experienced in their lifetime. How could he possibly follow that up? I do think if he did come that, combined with our new facilities and say what you want about him, the guy can flat-out recruit, we would be something closer to what Oregon State is, but I just don't think he could be as good as he was before he left. And he's no spring chicken either. And, "Anonymous", I do agree with you. IF a change happens, I really want us to look at youth as an option.

Oh, and THANKS Oregon for throwing a wrench into our bowl plans. Now you've given Arizona life, and if they get to 6 wins we are potentially screwed even if we win out! As if we needed another reason to hate the YUCKS, they go out and lose when we really needed them to win! Sigh.
